Should I post a simple announcement of an opening in the company on Linkedin? Something to the effect of "We have an opening for X here in Y-location, please contact me for details if interested?"
It's a mid-level purchasing position. I'm working my network directly for candidates but wasn't sure of the pitfalls of making a general announcement on an open forum.

We do it all the time (asking people within the organization to share job openings on their LinkedIn profiles). It hasn`t gone wrong so far.
It also means that when I am approached by people saying they are interested in a job and hearing about jobs at my organization, I ask them to follow me on LinkedIn to stay up to date on openings.
