Hey folks. I've spent a lot of time in the last six months to listen to the majority of the Manager Tools/Career Tools podcasts, and I love them. They've given me a lot of insight into not just the realm of work life, which I have yet to enter, but also in my everyday interactions with people.
I'm a highschool graduate with a few months to go until college, and I decided to compete with the local college grads for a few summer apprenticeships in the IT sector. Most of them require some college experience, so I don't have high chances, but hey, showing up is the first step to winning right? The positions require a CV, for some it is accompanied by a cover letter.
I initially approached writing my CV as if writing a resume. This obviously doesn't work, since I have no work experience and only a few accomplishments - a Career Tools-style resume with my credentials ends before the first third of the page. Google tells me to describe my entire life in a CV. In what way is a CT-style CV different from a CT-style resume?
Further, since I'll probably be the only highschool applicant in a pile of college resumes, for the positions which don't require a cover letter, is there a way to highlight that the lack of college is not a mistake (me sending an outdated document)?

They are the same
Historically they may have been different but nowadays they are different words for the same thing. Since you have no work experience, you will want to list activities in school. Did you do volunteer work in or out of school. Were you members of clubs. Captain of teams, etc. Each of these will allow you to list accomplishments. List your highschool dates and this will avoid any confusion. Even if it doesn't require a cover letter, why not do one, following the MT guidance.
You are off to a good start on your career. Good luck!!
Hi Peter
They're both the same thing. Some people in the US use CV to mean a resume in academia, but basically, what you need is what Manager Tools calls a resume. There's two podcasts which which help you:
First the basics: http://www.manager-tools.com/2005/10/your-resume-stinks
and then the tweaks for students: http://www.manager-tools.com/2010/10/resumes-graduates
Good luck with the apprenticeship!

I had some leftover space so I added my elementary school as well. The "accomplishments" from there are for the most part irrelevant and I kept them to myself, but I did write down a few that show that I have been aiming for this career path for a while.
It's tough partially because schools in my country don't "do" clubs/best student awards/etc. Still, it turned out a lot better than I expected, and I'm confident that I stand a chance now.
