I am in a direct report position and only recieve one-on-ones every quarter with my boss (at least we have something). The culture of the company is pretty relaxed when it comes to planned career development, as many companies are. With so infrequent O3O's our relationship is far behind where it should be and I don't feel we will ever get to a place where I can easily ask for development/coaching opportunities.
What I am doing is scooping up any sort of project that comes along. None have had any lasting significance, but I figure getting good at the small things and developing a reputation of a problem solver can't be a bad thing.
So how do I approach this subject without coming across as desperately looking for the next opportunity, as I am only 6 months into this new job and the lack of an extablished relationship with my boss.
(I know I need to work on the relationship and I wish my boss would prioritize our relationship higher. )
Thanks for any insight and suggestions.

Professional Updates?
Nate,
Have you tried to arrange professional updates with your boss? It seems to me this would tighten your relationship, opening the door for a development discussion.

Looks like a winner!
I can't believe I missed that one. I have only been listening for a year and am 3/4 the way through the 2005-2007 podcasts. I will put that one on the top of my list. Thanks Michael.
