Folks -- I'm looking for some advice for my daughter-in-law. She will finish her bachelor's degree in Business in May 2010 here in the US. She wants to go on and get a masters in international business while my son works on getting his doctorate in Chemistry. She's been told by a couple of schools that they won't really consider masters applicants who don't have some practical business experience. This is out of my realm of expertise, in that I came up through the technology and R&D ranks of the chemical industry and now work at a government lab.
Based on your respective experience, what suggestions would you offer for someone who will be coming out of school in a year, who is particularly interested in the marketing side of international business (particularly European) and who will want to be in a position to let her husband finish a 4 or 5 year graduate degree?
Thanks for your thoughts and assistance.

If the husband wants a Phd
If the husband wants a Phd in Chemistry soon, then that is probably the least flexible goal in their lives right now. His grad school will probably dictate where they need to live during that 4-5 year period.
Based on the location, she needs to set her sights on a local company that does business internationally. If they have choices about where he will attend grad school, then they should pick the place where she is most likely to be able to find a job with an international company.
Ideally, it would be good to pick a location where she could also get her masters without having to move again.
Building that work experience will help her get into business school when the time comes.
