Has anyone ever encountered a situation where the company suggests you should relocate to keep your job long term but offers no assistance.  The relo is 800+miles, significant change.  Did anyone try to negotiate relocation assistance successfully?

thanks!

I used to work for a company that did this all the time. The basic choice was move or lose your job. A lot of people moved because they couldn't find another job in this economy. A few people tried to negotiate and it was seen as choice #2.

Sorry for your situation. My company says that if they ask you to move to a job site more than 50 miles away, it triggers your severance plan if you  don't accept. Again, due to the economy, many people accepted, but it was more like 80 miles or so, not 800.

This is tied to an offer for a promotion btw.  It sounds like this is becoming more common in organizations.  It will be interesting to see what happens when the job market opens up and if these policies backfire.   I appreciate the comments.

I think what your company is doing is regrettable.  Companies CAN do stuff like that, but it's very shortsighted.  It has never happened to me or anyone I know.  I wouldn't plan on having a future there, even if you do decide to pay for your move to get the promotion.
