BLUF: How should I prepare for a development and career planning discussion with my department's HR manager?
My boss (High C/D) who is new to the organization has requested that his directs meet with the department's HR manager (High I) for a development and career planning discussion and I am uncertain how to prepare for the discussion. I have used the professional development podcasts to create a career development plan where I look at external job postings and more senior internal job postings to identify skills to develop and look for opportunities to develop such. As a result of this approach I have picked up some seemingly thankless projects other did not want to do because while the projects were not necessarily high profile, there were elements in the project that would provide experience in some of my developmental areas and I did not have to compete with co-workers for higher profile projects to get experience.
Much of my organization's career planning is based on preparing you for someone else's job. Whereas I try to base my career development on building new skills that help me in my current role and will be transferrable to my next role whether with my company or with another company.
Obviously the HR manager will create a summary of our discussion for my boss. How can I help ensure that my discussion is accurately captured and conveyed to my boss? Any watch outs for this discussion?

Well done on taking charge of your own career
Sounds like you have been doing all the right things and taking charge of your own career planning.
It's interesting that your manager has passed on this job to HR. Or is it common practice in your organisation for the HR Manager to take on this responsibility for all staff?
Considering your manager is high C/D, perhaps prepare your information with the reader in mind.... so ensure it is detailed, has a purpose and is to the point. Your face to face discussion can be communicated to your high I HR Manager with the same information and you could communication with passion and emotion (in a way they will receive it best).
Good luck.
Thanks
You are probably right, same basic info just communicated differently based on the audience. Right or wrong and it does not matter, my boss is so new to the organization and the team that I think he is trying to get as rapid assessment as possible of his bench strength and their interests. Good call preparing the documents in advance so there is not interpretation mistakes.
Thanks
