My boss resigned and I am one of 5 being considered to take over his position.  Any advice on how to become the clear choice?

BLUF: If you weren't the clear choice the day before he resigned, you're not going to be the clear choice the day after. But you can still maximize your chances of being picked.
What you can do for this time -

  • Deliver the best resume and interviews you can (the Interviewing Series is the best resource for this I have ever seen)
  • Cross your fingers

What you can do for next time -

  • Deliver results that help your boss achieve his/her goals
  • Build relationships with your peers, subordinates, and leadership
  • Demonstrate you can do your bosses job (the 150% rule)
  • Develop your successor and/or reduce the burden for your replacement to be successful

There are numerous casts for all of these areas, so MT can help you improve in all of these areas.
Best of luck
Roger
